The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines aging in place as: “the ability to live in one's own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.”
AARP found that 77% of adults 50-years old and older prefer to age in place.
Our solution is a partnership between the person aging in place and the person(s) providing the solution. Without the partnership, there is no solution. And yes we are fortunate when our partner has all their marbles, is capable of and enjoys living home alone, and understands that they have the responsibility to prepare for an emergency!
Solution(s) MUST be Integrated with daily habits
Protection that you can't access in time of need is useless eg pendants you don't wear
Daily safety checks! Phone calls with someone that would miss you!
Mitigate Murphy's Law by providing layers of protection
Assume worst case scenario eg fallen and can't get up
Solutions must be tested regularly eg passwords expire
Knowing about and being able to execute a health check
It could be the Police, a neighbor, and/or a local friend
Home Access
Consider First Responders eg do they have access to the home?
Aging in place is NOT isolation!
Know your limits!
Address problematic situations before they become one
rugs that slip
Having a smartphone
Keeping Phone/Mobile Phone Nearby as much as possible
charging by your bedside
Wearing and knowing how to use your safety device
a pendant
a Smart Watch
Actively participates in daily safety checks
What works for one may not work for another.
